I started off just like you - trying to get a company to support my obsession.

For me, that obsession was surfing, and it was all I wanted to do. I dreamed of getting someone to give me free gear and product and eventually an actual paycheck to surf. Well the dream eventually came true, but I didn’t make it easy.

Actually, I made it pretty difficult on myself because I made practically every stupid mistake there is for getting sponsored and getting the most out of your sponsors.

Eventually, though I figured it out. After my surfing career was over I moved into the sponsorship role myself working for one of the largest sports apparel companies in the world. (Still do work for them, and it is the reason why my identity is kept secret.) Being on the sponsor side of the fence opened my eyes to everything athletes do that increase or decreases their values to sponsors.

It is amazing what I have seen and learned over the past 20 years in the industry and it just makes sense to pass it on to athletes who can actually do something with that knowledge.
